As a new mom, I can totally relate to those moments where you find yourself with a fussy baby and you have no idea how to sooth their pain. The crying can seem endless and you can’t stop yourself from feeling helpless. It’s okay mamas, I’ve been there many times too! Figuring out how to keep your baby calm is definitely (in my opinion) the hardest thing that motherhood can present you with. So, I wanted to share a few tips that I have and use and do daily to keep my baby calm when the going gets tough.
By far, Baby wearing is the best thing to do for your fussy little babe. All that they really want is to feel comfort from the person they trust the most. The moment that you place them on your chest, they get this sense of security and instant comfort. One of my all time favorite baby carriers is from Amazon. I love the sleepy wrap carrier because it is comfortable, light weight, great quality and unlike many carriers it is insanely affordable! However, there are many other carriers out in the market. Find what fits for your lifestyle and of course for your baby!
Rotate, Rotate, Rotate
Babies are hard to please at times and when having them close to you isn’t working then what are you supposed to do? Well, this has happened to me and the only thing that seems to work is rotating my baby from area to area or from play furniture to play furniture. JuJu is such a busy baby and there’s times he gets fussy and doesn’t want any comfort. When those moments happen then I just simply rotate him around the house. We go from jumper to rocker and from rocker to play gym. Sometimes, he even wants to play in his crib. However many rotations it takes, I guaranty that your baby will calm down. Babies get stimulated very easily and as a mother you can definitely use this in your favor.
I have to say that before I had JuJu I honestly believed that white noises were a bunch of baloney. My thoughts on white noises were that they simply didn’t work. However, after using white noises during our sleep training process I have to say that white noises are just pure genius. The idea behind white noises is that it can sooth your baby and promote better sleep. The science behind it is actually very simple.. white noises are a similar sound that babies are familiar with because of the noises that were muffled by amniotic fluid while they spent their time in the womb. Therefore, white noises are a familiar sound that will soothe and calm your baby down.
Sink sitting sounds a little crazy… I know, I know, but hear me out. Babies are super curious and they love new experiences. (at-least mine is a little curious babe!) What is sink sitting you may ask? Well, Sink sitting is exactly what it sounds like… I basically get the sink nice and cosy with a couple of blankets and then I just place Julius inside the sink. It totally helps with getting ready in the mornings and cooking in the kitchen!
A change of scenery can really calm down a fussy little babe. Julius and I love going on walks around the neighborhood. As soon as I place his little chunky body into the stroller he immediately stops crying. It is AMAZING!
A lot of parents are not big fans of pacifiers. I, on the other-hand, think it’s totally fine. When Julius was in his early months, he was a big fan of his binky and when he needed that extra comfort I would not hesitate on letting him have it. However, JuJu weaned away from using a binky as he got older. By four months, he hated the binky and would rather get cuddles and hugs from my mommy and daddy.
Back Rubs & Bicycle Legs
In general, back rubs can be soothing. I usually give back rubs to Julius when he has gas pains or is just a little too fussy. Babies are sometimes in pain and we don’t realize that it could be almost anything. I would totally recommend trying a few new things with your baby before coming to a conclusion that he is in pain.
Singing to Julius is my favorite thing to do when nothing else seems to work. I have been singing to him since he was a day old and I’ve notice that it always seems to calm him down. To be honest, All the songs I sing to him are all made up. Out of desperation, I started making up songs for him and now those songs are the only ones that he likes to listen to.
When all fails, I give Julius a nice little ear massage. I pretend to be cleaning his ear and it always puts him right to sleep. It is definitely the cutest and weirdest thing ever.
Life with a fussy baby can get a little frustrating but finding little ways to calm them down will help in keeping yourself sane. I hope these tips come in handy when your baby starts to get fussy.
P.S What are some of the things you do to calm your fussy little babe? I would love to know!
